9 March 2010 Day One Theme: Teaching Creative Writing in the Academy
Location Multi-media Room, The City University of Hong Kong. Coffee & Tea provided.

9:15am Keynote address: Robin Hemley (University of Iowa. Director, Nonfiction Writing Program)
10:00am- 12Noon
Roundtable led by teachers of creative writing who will give short provocative papers (10 mins) leading to interactive discussion with participants. Provocateurs: Andrew Cowan (University of East Anglia, Director of the Creative Writing), Catherine Cole (RMIT University, Professor of Creative Writing), Nury Vittachi (Hong Kong Polytechnic University), Alex Kuo (Washington State University, Writer-in-Residence & Professor of English), Senior Lecturer Creative Writing), Jon Cook(University of East Anglia, Professor of English) and Isagani Cruz (Distinguished Philippine writer/teacher) – Moderated by Xu Xi.
12 Noon- 2:00pm Lunch – Buffet Style/Sandwiches outside room
2:00pm-4:30pm Mini Forensic of the Work of Featured Writers. Each Writer will speak for about 10 MINS on aspects of their creative writing process, followed by brief illustrative readings. Featured writers: Robin Hemley, Catherine Cole, P.K. Leung, Alex Kuo, Andrew Cowan and Sharmistha  Mohanty

Roundtable with provocateurs: Brian Castro (University of Adelaide, Chair of Creative Writing), Ouyang Yu (University of Wollongong, Research Fellow), Jose Dalisay (University of the Philippines, Professor of English and Creative Writing), Rukmini Bhaya Nair (Indian Institute of Technology, Professor of Linguistics & English), Dai Fan (Sun Yat-Sen University, Chair of English), Kim Cheng Boey (University of Newcastle, Senior Lecturer), Dinah R. Sianturi (De La Salle University, Philippines)Moderated by Jane Camens.

Registration

People who registered before 14 Feb 2010 will have priority seating at the symposium. We have now reached our seating capacity limit unless there are late cancellations.

 

The symposium registration fee (for part or all) is HK$250 (US$33), discounted to HK$100 for members of the Asia-Pacific Writing Partnership. The fee is to be paid in Hong Kong dollars at the door on the first day of the symposium. Seating capacity is limited.

 

Publications
Mascara Literary Review invites previously unpublished poetry, fiction, and literary translations from participants at the Writing Across Cultures symposium. Enquiries and submissions to editor@mascarareview.com TEXT: Journal Of Writing And Writing Courses is likely to publish selected papers from the symposium. TEXT is an international electronic refereed journal published twice yearly by the Australian Association Of Writing Progams. It has an ‘A’ ranking among Australian journals ranked for Excellence in Research.
