Making the Literature of A Nation: University Creative Writing Programs at the Cutting Edge

Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

‘The first creative writing class started in America at Iowa University in 1936 and the first creative writing student was someone called Robert Frost. They (Americans) have that long tradition that we don’t have. We think it’s new and snazzy, but it’s a very good environment to be in where you’re no longer just debating dead authors, no longer just accepting what your lecturers tell you or critiquing the critics. You are actually involved in making the literature of this country and I think that’s the very, very cutting edge point where things are happening. It’s rare that there’s somebody out there in a wilderness in a garret writing great stuff. It’s more likely you’ll find good writers coming through the institutions.’  Brian Castro
