First Low-Residency Creative Writing MFA in Asia

Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

The City University of Hong Kong is offering a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing programme - the first low-residency MFA established in Asia, and the only programme in the world with a specific focus on Asian writing.

Low residency degrees are particularly well-suited to working people whose careers make full-time study difficult. The programme seeks students from around the world. It hopes to attract writers with an interest in Asian writing (or diasporic Asian writing) in English.

This two-year degree is designed to improve and develop practising writers. It’s faculty is made up of well-established authors who have both Asian and international backgrounds and expertise. The MFA is a professional qualification that prepares graduates to work in a range of fields where good writing is required, including cultural and arts administration, the creative industries, editing, and publishing. It is also a widely-acknowledged qualification for teaching creative writing at high schools and universities.

The low-residency MFA model offered by City University is designed for intensive and highly effective one-on-one distance mentoring, supplemented by short and intensive writing workshop residencies.

To ensure the quality of the programme, only a limited number of students will be accepted each year, and candidates for the programme are required to have a documented ability in creative writing to be admitted. The CityU MFA is an intensive and rigorous programme to develop writers with an interest in such genres of writing as creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry.

The programme starts accepting applications from January 15, 2010 for the first summer residency which runs  July 24 – July 31, 2010.  The application deadline is 15 April.

The City University of Hong Kong is the host of the 2010 Asia-Pacific Writing Partnership symposium, Writing Across Cultures.
