Rukmini Bhaya Nair

Rukmini Bhaya Nair is Professor of Linguistics and English at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD). She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1982 and a second honoris causa doctoral degree from the University of Antwerp, Belgium in 2006 for her contribution to research in the areas of narratology, linguistics and literary theory, in which year she also held a CRASSH Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. In 2005-6, Nair was invited to be Visiting Professor at Stanford after which she returned as Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IITD, from 2006-2009. Her latest award is a two-year Senior Nehru Fellowship at Teen Murti (2010-12) for a project on ‘Contemporary Indian Keywords’ and her latest major grant is from the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology to conduct basic research in cognitive science on the theme of ‘Language, Emotion and Culture’ (2009-2012). Rukmini Bhaya Nair was a founding board member of the Asia-Pacific Writing Partnership, the forerunner to AP Writers. She hosted the APWP’s ‘Writing the Future’ conference and creative workshops in New Delhi and Shimla in 2009.
