He was named a Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Australian Novelist in 2017 for his debut novel, Ruins, which was also shortlisted for the Australian Literary Society Gold Medal and the Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction. Rajith runs Open City Stories, an oral history project documenting the lives of a group of asylum seekers in Melbourne.
