Manfred Malzahn was born and educated in the Federal Republic of Germany. He studied English and German Literature and Linguistics at the University of the Ruhr in Bochum and the University of Wuppertal, where he obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on the contemporary Scottish novel in 1983. After national service with the Goethe Institute, he went on to teach at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, the University of Monastir in Tunisia, the University of Sétif in Algeria, the University of Malawi, and the National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan. Since 1998, he has been a Professor of English Literature at the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, UAE. He has written extensively, but by no means exclusively, on Scottish literature and culture, and since the late 1970s, he has also published creative work in poetry and fiction in English, Scots and German, as well as numerous song lyrics and the libretto to a musical drama.
