Leon Trainor

Leon Trainor was born in Geraldton, Western Australia, in 1945. He lived 32 years in WA and two years in France and Italy. These experiences informed his first two books of poetry, Memory’s Apprentice (1977) and Benediction (1979). He moved to Canberra in 1979, where he wrote another two collections of poetry, Free Song (1999) and Before Afterwards (2009). His critically acclaimed novel Livio was published in 1988. He wrote book reviews for various periodicals from 1989 to 1994. Since that time he has had poems and short stories published regularly in Australian magazines. He collaborated with composer Hans Günter Mommer to produce two song cycles for baritone and piano, Defined by Light (1996) and In the Natural World (1998). His fifth book of poetry, In Country (2012) was a collaboration with artist Savanhdary Vongpoothorn and is the first art book he has produced.
